Dr. Jagdev answers your most common questions about tooth extractions
Do you remove wisdom teeth?
Great news! We work with patients of all ages who need wisdom teeth extracted. Not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth extracted, but we can help you to understand whether or not it is important for your persistent health and wellness.
Does a tooth extraction hurt?
We’ll ensure you’re fully numb and comfortable during the procedure. We may prescribe you pain medication to take after surgery. You can also use an ice pack to alleviate any discomfort in the day or so after the procedure.
How long will it take to recover from a dental extraction?
Once your surgery is complete, you may need to take rest for some time. If you were given anesthesia, you will need to have a friend or family member drive you home. We will apply gauze to the wound at the end of the surgery, and you will need to change it periodically.
If the bleeding continues for more than 24 hours, please give us a call. When you return home, try to rest but avoid lying flat, as this could prolong the bleeding. Instead, prop your head up on a pillow.
Can I eat and drink immediately following an extraction?
Post-operative patients should avoid consuming hard and dry foods in order to prevent undoing any progress made during surgery. Instead, it is recommended that patients eat foods such as gelatin, pudding, yogurt, mashed potatoes, or ice cream.
When drinking, patients should avoid using a straw as the sucking motion can loosen sutures and slow the clotting process. The same precautions should be taken when smoking or vaping.
